The port of Piraeus is located just 12 km south of the center of Athens and is its main port. Historically this port was the starting point for many naval expeditions and the Athenian navy fleet was also based here. Over the centuries, with the decline of Athens the port of Piraeus also declined and then resumed some activities in the nineteenth century. Today, Piraeus is the largest port in Europe in terms of commercial traffic and every year it is a stopover for about 20 thousand passengers.
Piraeus covers the routes to the major Greek islands, including the Cicaldi, the Dodecanese archipelago, the islands of the eastern Aegean and Crete. Besides normal ferries and ships, catamarans and fast ships also leave from Piraeus.
There are 12 gates in the port going to the following locations:
- E1 - Dodecanese
- E2 - Crete, Chios, Mitilini, Ikaria, Samos
- E3 - Crete, Kithira - incoming vehicles
- E4 - Kithira - outgoing vehicles
- E5 - Bus terminal - pedestrian entrance
- E6 - Cyclades, Rethymno - pedestrian bridge - pedestrian entrance
- E7 - Cyclades, Rethymno
- E8 - Argosaronic Gulf
- E9 - Cyclades, Samos, Ikaria
- E10 - Cyclades, Samos, Ikaria - outgoing vehicles
- E11 - Cruise Terminal
- A E12 - Cruise Terminal B
