Port of Piraeus

The port of Piraeus is located just 12 km south of the center of Athens and is its main port. Historically this port was the starting point for many naval expeditions and the Athenian navy fleet was also based here. Over the centuries, with the decline of Athens the port of Piraeus also declined and then resumed some activities in the nineteenth century. Today, Piraeus is the largest port in Europe in terms of commercial traffic and every year it is a stopover for about 20 thousand passengers.

Piraeus covers the routes to the major Greek islands, including the Cicaldi, the Dodecanese archipelago, the islands of the eastern Aegean and Crete. Besides normal ferries and ships, catamarans and fast ships also leave from Piraeus.

How to reach the port of Piraeus 

From the center of Athens:

By car from Syntagma or Omonia, the port is about 10 km away. From the center there are signs for Piraeus, the journey takes about 30 minutes.

By bus take bus number 49 from Omonia or bus number 40 from Syntagma and get off at Piazza Kotzia - Piraeus. These two buses run 24 hours a day, and leave every 15-20 minutes from the center of Athens. 

By Metro take the Green metro line starts from Kifissia and stops right in front of the port. The metro is open from 05:30 to midnight and Friday and Saturday until 2 am. 

From the Athens airport:

By Metro From the airport underground station take the blue line to Piazza Monastiraki, change to the green line to Piraeus  and the stop is directly in front of the port. The metro from the airport runs from 06:33 in the morning until 10:33 pm, with departures every half hour. The journey takes about an hour and a half.

By Bus the X96 bus directly connects the airport to the port of Piraeus, the journey takes about 90 minutes and the line is operational H24. -

From the Port of Patras:

By Bus from the new port of Patras, there is the KFEL Bus station anout 1 km away, from which buses leave for Athens every half an hour. The ride takes about four hours. Arrived at the Athens bus terminal, there are buses and metro that lead directly to Piraeus - opposite the port (for more details see above "From the center of Athens in Metro")

By car the port of Patras is about 216 km from Piraeus - the journey takes about 3 hours, along the E65 - the Olimpia Odos road - the A8 and the E94.
