The port of Igoumenitsa is the Greek port which is closest to the Balkans and Italy, so every year it sees about 2.5 million passengers and vehicles pass through. The new port area was launched in 2003 a little further from the urban area and closer to the town of Ladochori. This was chosen as a strategic location to allow ships to arrive from various countries, from those in the eastern and southern Mediterranean and the Balkan countries. The old port area is now only used for domestic connections and with the islands of Corfu (Kerkyra and Lefkimmi) and Paxos.
Given its importance, the port is equipped with high-quality services and aims to reduce environmental impact through carrying out correct waste management and ensuring a low impact on the surrounding marine environment.
