Port of Harwich

Harwich is the smallest of the three main cruise ports that serve London (Harwich, Southampton and Dover). It has a single berth, with a single terminal, even at the height of the summer season there is only one cruise ship every other day. Next door to the cruise terminal is the ferry terminal, with large ferries going to the Netherlands and Scandinavia. Both ferry and cruise terminals are a small part of a much larger port complex. On the other side of the river from Harwich is Felixstowe, one of the UK's largest container ports. There are facilities at the passenger terminal, including a cafe, toilets, an exchange bureau, and telephones. There is also a ticket office for the railway.

Getting to and from Harwich passenger terminal

Harwich is around 90 miles (145 km) from the centre of London. On a good day, a vehicle will make it in less than 2 hours. However, be aware if you are travelling at rush hour, between 8 and 9 am or between 5 and 7 pm, the roads are hectic, and traffic comes to a standstill daily. A spacious coach park and accessible taxi rank are located immediately outside the front entrance to the cruise terminal. If you have a coach or private vehicle waiting, then it's just a short walk.

If you are travelling as afoot passenger, then there are two railway stations in Harwich, Harwich Town and Harwich International. Harwich International serves the docks, ferry and cruise terminal and connects with London's Liverpool Street Station after you change trains at Manningtree Station. The journey time is around 75 minutes. There is also a local bus service that runs from outside Harwich International station to Harwich Town.

Harwich is the other side of London from London's major airports Heathrow and Gatwick Airports, but the closest London Airport is Stansted Airport.
