The port is near the town of Getxo and is 20 kilometres from Bilbao. The Original Port of Bilbao was moved from the city centre, downstream to the Bay of Biscay, to support more ocean trade and to make room for new city centre riverside developments. In 2018, the Port of Bilbao received 59 cruise vessels with 86,500 passengers, mainly from the UK and Germany.
The terminal in Bilbao is small but offers toilets; a snack bar, tourist office and muzzled dogs on a lead are allowed in all areas of the port. The port car park is available for short and long-stay parking, including parking overnight. There are accessible parking spaces and spaces for caravans and motorhomes. For 10:30 morning departures, you can check-in between 16:00 to 19:00 and stay overnight with your vehicle in the vehicle check-in lanes, but your car should not be left unattended and toilet facilities are available overnight.
How to get to the ferry terminal
If you are travelling to the port by car, it is around 25 minutes to get from the city centre to passenger ferry terminal. There is a shuttle bus, metro, or a taxi to the city centre from the port. There are also shuttle buses available for the beach and nearby World Heritage Puente Bizkaia.
The nearest metro station to the port is Santurtzi, approximately 3km from the terminal, 5 minutes in a taxi. Santurtzi is the last stop on Metro Line 2 and goes direct to Bilbao city centre. In the city centre, Bilbao central station is at Plaza Circular 2. There are direct trains from here to major Spanish cities and the whole of the Iberian Peninsula. Trains to Madrid leave twice a day and take around 6 or 7 hours. Bilbao International Airport is just 15 minutes drive from the port.
