Pets

Pets can travel in a carrier, pet kennel, or a pet-friendly cabin. Animals weighing over 8 kg (up to 20 kg on some ships) must use a kennel or a pet-friendly cabin. Those weighing under 8 kg can travel in a pet bag, but they are not allowed in certain areas such as children’s zones, restaurants, bars, and lounges.

Pets must be kept on a leash, and a muzzle is recommended in public areas. Dangerous animals are not permitted. The pet owner is responsible for the health and well-being of the animal and for any damage caused on board.

If your pet stays in the vehicle during the crossing, no additional ticket is required, but you must inform the staff at check-in. You can book in advance to ensure the availability of pet-friendly cabins, which also provide water bowls and space for up to 3 larger pets. During the trip, it’s not recommended to leave pets alone for long periods.

Pets

Pets are welcome on all regular Viking Line voyages, though they must not disturb other passengers or crew. Key rules include:

  • Pets are allowed only on regular routes, not on cruises or Birka Gotland sailings.
  • A ticket is required for each pet, with fees based on the specific route.
  • Pets are not allowed in restaurants and must stay in cabins during overnight journeys; allergy-friendly cabins cannot be reserved for pets.
  • There is a limit on the number of pets per voyage.
  • Guide dogs travel for free on all ships, even where other pets are restricted.
  • Pet travel must be mentioned when booking, and pets must not be left unattended.

On the Helsinki–Tallinn route from October to April, pets can travel free in a car if noted during booking. However, the car deck is off-limits during the voyage, and feeding or visiting pets there is not allowed. Extreme weather conditions may also restrict pets from traveling on the car deck.
