Tangier is in northern Morocco overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar, it is a fascinating travel destination thanks to the maze of streets and alleys in the centre and the liveliness of the port, which has been of great importance for the locals since ancient times.

History

Tangier has been inhabited for over 2500 years and has seen a succession of rulers pass through, from the Phoenicians, Romans, Visigoths and Arabs, to the Portuguese, Spanish and English. The Garden of the Hesperides is said to be located near Tangier, one of the most magical places of antiquity. Today, Tangier is a very modern city but you can still feel the history and tradition in the city, which has also enchanted many historical figures including Matisse, Hendrix, Churchill.

Places to visit

The centre of Tangier is called Great Socco, a large square where people come in from the countryside to sell their products. Be sure to take a nice walk in the Medina to see the church of the Immaculate Conception, which dates back to the late 1800s and was built by the Spaniards. The Residence of the Nabib is also worth a look from there you will find yourself in Petit Socco, a small square that leads up to the Great Mosque, which was once a Roman temple and later turned into a church by the Portuguese, today it is once again a mosque. The museum of the Kasbah was once the residence of the pasha but today it houses a very interesting collation of ancient maps the building has a beautiful octagonal minaret adorned with coloured majolica.

Beaches around Tangier 

The city of Tangier is known for its white sandy beaches and crystal clear sea, just perfect for snorkelling and sometimes surfing. A very well known area is the bay, where you can bathe in both the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean. The beaches are well equipped and offer all kinds of services and the most popular ones are Tangier Beach, Playa Blanca Tangier, Dalia Beach and Kaf Lahmam.
