Guide of Tremiti

The Tremiti islands are located off the coast of Puglia in southern Italy. They were once called the Diomedee islands, as legend tells that they were created by Diomedes when he threw three large boulders into the sea forming the islands of San Domino, San Nicola and Capraia. The Tremiti Islands are becoming a popular tourist destination for good reason and there is a lot to be discovered here.

History

The Tremiti Islands are linked to some other very fascinating myths and legends, it is said that the birds that live on the three islands are the friends of Diomedes, who were said to be transformed into birds by compassion and revenge from the goddess Aphrodite. There is another legend of a hermit who chose to live on the island of San Nicola as a place for meditation and contemplation. One night the Madonna appeared to him in a dream, pointing to a place where he could find coins and jewels, the treasure of Menelaus, and so he built a church to honour the Virgin Mary.

Places to visit

It is worth paying a visit to the Sanctuary of Santa Maria a Mare, it was founded by Benedictine monks and dominates the coastline of San Nicola. Inside the monastry, there is an interesting wooden statue of the Virgin Mary with the Child and a wonderful mosaic floor. Staying on the island of San Nicola, you should also consider visiting the Castello dei Badiali, which was built by Charles of Anjou to protect the island and the monastery. Diving in the Tremiti Islands is brilliant, there are some beautiful flora and fauna to discover on the seabed including seahorses, lobsters, lobsters, black corals and sea fans.

Beaches

The only sandy beach in San Domino is Cala delle Arene, it is shallow and perfect for families with children. The cove is surrounded by dense vegetation, palm trees and high rocky cliffs. On the island of Dan Domino, near Cala Matano small lane which leads to a wonderful stretch of coastline. On San Nicola, we recommend Marinella Beach, which is a very popular and easily accessible beach surrounded by tall white cliffs.
