SORRENTO
Sorrento is an Italian town in the Gulf of Naples and it is famous for its charm and beauty. The history of this city has seen many populations succeed each other and leave cultural and architectural influences behind, from the Etruscans to the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Normans and Aragonese. The Aragonese period was at the height of Sorrento’s splendour. The city has always been a destination for writers, including Byron, Goethe, Dickens, Ibsen. This was especially true during the eighteenth century where Sorrento experienced a great period of cultural and economic development.
Places to visit
Today this town welcomes tourists and is full of cultural events, including international film festivals. The historic centre of Sorrento still maintains the original Roman urban, there is the Duomo with the neo-gothic façade, the Church of San Francesco with its fourteenth-century cloister and Arabic-style portico. The city hosts the Museo Correale di Terranova, where Greek and Roman artefacts are exhibited along with the Capodimonte porcelains.
Beaches
Among the most fascinating beaches is Bagni Regina Giovanna, a rocky cliff overlooking the sea with a wooden staircase to allow access to the water. Marina Piccola is located in the center of Sorrento, the beach is accessible on foot and formed by volcanic sand and offers a splendid views of the Gulf. The beach of Marina Grande is located within the picturesque village of Marina Grande and is the most beautiful beach near Sorrento, from which you can admire moored boats and fishermen on the shore.
