Guide of Olbia

Olbia is on the east coast of Sardinia and is a city rich in history, culture and nature, surrounded by beautiful sea. The Greeks called it Olbia which means ‘happy’ in ancient Greek.

History

The city originated in the Middle Neolithic period and there is evidence for this in some fragments of pottery found in Porto Rotondo and a statuette of the Mother Goddess found in Santa Mariedda. Numerous Nuraghic remains have also been found from the Phoenician, Greek and Carthaginian ages. A large naval battle occurred in 535 BC just off the coast of Olbia. Around 60 ships took part in the battle of the Sardinian Sea, which was considered the first great naval battle in the western seas. However, it was the Romans who made Olbia both an important commercial military hub, making it strategically important.

Places to visit

The Fausto Noce Natural Park is not to be missed for those who want to enjoy nature and wonderful panoramic views. The historic centre of Olbia is another a jewel to discover, it is rich in archaeological remains such as the Punic walls and there are buildings dating back to Roman and medieval times. The Museum of the Roman Punic necropolis is interesting and has about 400 tombs from the period and is located near the Basilica of San Simplicio. Near the city, there are some ancient castles to visit such as Castelllo di Pedrez, an 89-meter high medieval castle along with Castello a Paulazza.

Beaches

The best beach in Olbia is crescent-shaped Pittulongu. More great beaches include Pellicano and Squalo, that are renowned for their clear, calm waters and many amenities. Spiaggia dello Squalo has a sandy coastline and shallow water, making it suitable for families with small children.
