Ponza is the largest island in the Pontino Archipelago and is part of the province of Latina, in the region of Lazio. Ponza is a mountainous, volcanic island and the highest point is the Monte Guardia. The first humans arrived on Ponza during the Neolithic era and following this thee was a succession of populations including the Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans who settled in Ponza and built aqueducts and architecture that we can still see on Ponza today. Places to visit
The coasts of Ponza are high, jagged and steep, they are full coves, caves and inlets that make scuba diving very interesting. The best places for diving are the Formiche; Punta della Guardia; the Secca di Mezzogiorno; the Scoglio della Botte. A charming little place is the cliff of Lucia Rosa, which takes its name from the young woman who took her life there over love, by throwing herself from the cliff in 1800.
There are also natural swimming pools on Ponza, in two closed inlets that are accessible from the sea by a narrow passage. Another natural wonder is Cala Fonte, which is easily reachable from the sea. In the past it housed pools built by fishermen, to deposit their boats and fishing gear.
Beaches
Chiaia di Luna is one of the best beaches and is very popular with tourists. It is easy to reach on foot and cliffs overlooking the sea surround the sandy beach. Frontone beach is accessible by boat and has pebbles and transparent waters; it is very popular even in the evening.
