Guide of Stromboli

Stromboli is part of the Aeolian Islands, located in the Tyrrhenian Sea just off the coast of Sicily. It has an active volcano on the island and is the northernmost island in the archipelago. The volcano is active and eruptions occur almost every hour! The name Stromboli derives from ancient Greek, meaning round, because of the shape of the island. Also in Sicilian dialect, the word ‘strummulu’ mans spinning top. The Sicilians know the volcano as Iddu, meaning ‘he’. Stromboli has been inhabited since ancient times and has prospered from the production and cultivation of olives, vineyards, figs, Malvasia wine, and fishing. The succession of earthquakes and eruptions from 1930 onwards meant that the island's population begin to emigrate and today only around 400 inhabitants inhabit Stromboli.

Places to visit

Stromboli has a collection of small beaches with black sand that alternate between caves and inlets, there are white houses that are typical of the Mediterranean. The vegetation includes palm trees and olive trees and the volcano overlooks the blue sea, which bubbles and simmers which is amazing to watch at night. Ginostra is a small town on the south-east coast and can only be reached by sea, its port, the pertuso, is tiny and wedged between the rocks which open way to a staircase leading to the city centre. There are also some particularly beautiful coves on Stromboli, such as Piscità, with volcanic pebbles and fine black sand and the beaches all have varied landscapes.
