The beautiful city of Stari Grad is located on the island of Hvar, in Croatia. The city has a beautiful centre with an ancient Greek agricultural area that has been given UNESCO status. History

The city was founded by a Greek population from the island of Paro, who gave it the name of Pharos, then from 1200, it was known as Civitas Vetu. However, the city was inhabited from before this period which has been proven by the Neolithic ceramics that were excavated in the nearby caves, such as the Grotta di Vaganac. The Middle Ages were a very important period as can be seen in all the forts and buildings in the city that were constructed at that time. Due to its strategic location on the island, Stari Grad was a refuge for sailors for centuries.

Places to visit

The Ettoreo Palace, known by the Croatian name of kaštel Tvrdalj, is a villa and fort that was built in the Renaissance. The palace has a large fish pond filled with seawater and many fish and is surrounded by a beautiful garden. Do not miss a walk through the centre to admire the ancient buildings and stone houses that are all well preserved.

Beaches

Lanterna is a pebble and concrete beach in the city centre, then there is Maslinica, which is a sandy beach near the port. For those looking for rocky beaches with crystal clear waters near Stari Grad, there are the beaches of Baba and Zavala.
