NetFerry visits the Canary Islands: five beaches to check out!

Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and characterised by sandy beaches, mountains, nature and waves; the Canary Islands are a paradise. Formally part of Spanish territory, they are now autonomous, and each island offers a unique and spectacular landscape. Choose from Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. In this article, we are going to explore five beaches not to be missed on your trip to the Canary Islands!

Maspalomas

Maspalomas is located in the south of Gran Canaria, near the city of San Bartolomè di Tirajana.  This beach is famous for its sand dunes, which make you feel like you are in the middle of a desert overlooking the blue sea. These beautiful golden sand dunes, together with the crystal-clear waters and cacti that frame the beach, create a truly breathtaking landscape. Maspalomas beach welcomes visitors all year round, as the average annual temperature here is 20 °C!

Playa de Sotavento

If you are in Fuerteventura, you cannot miss Playa De Sotavento, one of the most famous beaches in the entire archipelago. It is located along the southeast coast of Fuerteventura, immediately after the tourist resort of Costa Calma and within the Jandia Natural Park. Here, the combination of deep blue waters and white sand look like a tropical island. The tide also lowers and rises during the day – generating small lagoons and give you the feeling that you are on a different beach! This beach is a good place for sports enthusiasts as the location for the world windsurfing and kitesurfing championships.

Playa de Papagayo

This beach is located on Lanzarote island, in the popular tourist area  Playa Blanca. Playa de Papagayo, which means ''Parrot beach'', is made up of several coves and is considered the most beautiful beach in the south of the island. Playa de Papagayo is not only famous for its white sand, clear emerald waters. The beach is also sheltered from winds, so the water is also almost always calm; making it a paradise for scuba divers and snorkellers. There aren't any bars or restaurants on Playa de Papagayo, and it is quite secluded; so don't forget to bring your own umbrella and a picnic.

Playa de Las Teresitas

Of all the beaches in Tenerife,  Playa de las Teresitas is one of the most beautiful, located a few kilometres from Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The beach is equipped with many services including showers, kiosks serving food and drinks and access for the disabled. This beach is ideal for everyone, as the waters are sheltered, reducing waves and making it possible to enjoy a lovely swim in complete tranquillity. The beaches golden sand was actually brought over from Africa so, despite not being entirely ''natural'', it remains probably the prettiest beach in Tenerife.

Puerto Naos

Puerto Naos is the largest beach on La Palma and is located in the southwest area of the island. It is a beach renowned for top-class services and has been assigned a Blue Flag every year since 2007. The peculiarity of this beach is its black volcanic sand. The colour changes throughout the day and takes on different shades depending on the sunlight. All services are available, including umbrellas, sunbeds, plenty of bars serving delicious food and drinks and a diving centre. This beach is also completely accessible and equipped for visitors with disabilities and mobility issues.
