Discover the best beaches on Crete with NetFerry!
With almost 1000 kilometres of beautiful coastline, Crete is a world-famous destination for sea lovers. Whether you like surfing or just lying on the beach, with its several hundred beaches, Crete will not disappoint anyone! Netferry has selected the five most beautiful beaches on the island for you.
Balos
Balos is the most photographed beach on the island. This magnificent lagoon lies behind the stunning peninsula that extends from the beach. Balos beach offers surreal shades of blue and green in the water and a beach of the finest white sand. In some areas, the sand is actually slightly pink, a typical trait of some beaches on Crete; its the result of a build-up of crushed shells brought in by the currents. Here, the sea is always flat and crystal clear and the water is quite shallow. Balos is part of a protected natural reserve and can be reached in two ways: by using a boat service from the port of Kissamos or by car, parking in Cape Gramovusa and walking for about 30 minutes.
Efalonissi
Also part of a protected natural reserve, Efalonissi is a small island located near the south-west coast of Crete. This beach is amongst the most beautiful in Europe. The bay has incredible colours, and it is no coincidence that Efalonissi called it ‘the Caribbean of the Mediterranean’! As you might expect, the beach has fine, white sand and like Balos, also has some areas where the sand is a delicate pink colour.
Falassarna
Falassarna is one of the best beaches in western Crete. It is less busy than nearby Balos lagoon. The beach has very fine sand – almost of the consistency of flour – and very shallow water. It is, therefore, a suitable option for families with children. It can become very busy during the summer, but it never feels too crowded because the beach is very long and wide. Finally, due to its geographical position, Falassarna beach is one of the most sheltered areas on the island and unaffected by winds.
Triopetra
Triopetra beach is perfect for taking pictures at sunset. The three large rocks in front of the bay, half-immersed in the sea, which make for a spectacular view at sunset. The beach takes its name from these rocks as Triopetra in Greek means ‘three rocks’. The bay is made up of two parts: Small Triopetra, extending towards the south, which is smaller and more intimate; and the larger area is called Triopetra, and consists of beautiful golden sand, extending for several kilometres. Triopetra can be reached by car via a rather winding road.
Aglos Pavlos
Aglos Pavlos beach is a seaside retreat of almost other-worldly tranquillity, found at the bottom of a dirt road in the central south area of Crete. The narrow sandy beach is situated within a bay bordered by two high cliffs and there are some very interesting caves for snorkelers to explore. There are a few places to eat and sleep nearby, along with a yoga centre. It is the perfect place for visitors looking to relax and enjoy a beautiful natural area. It is quite a distance from Chania but, for those looking for something less crowded and noisy, it is absolutely worth it.
